DAS MEER,
DAS DENKT . .
was er aufschreibt.
Illusion?
Was glaube
THE
SEA THAT THINKS . . . is a film-within-a-film with plenty of
surprises, twists and turns and differ-ing perspectives. The
film centres on Bart, a writer who is working on a screenplay
for a film entitled ‘The Sea that Thinks’. He writes down what
he does, and he does what he writes down. Thanks to his film,
he finds an answer to the burning question of how to find happiness.
Using astonish-ing examples, Bart demonstrates that the world
only exists in our con-sciousness. What is real and what is
an illusion? Do we not believe in our dream world too, while
we are dreaming? And do we not also believe the world of the
film we are watching? Why should that be, he asks? His com-pilation
of images and texts has a hypnotic effect on the viewer, resulting
in a confusing but also humorous adventure. As the film progresses,
it becomes clear that the tortured writer is not the film’s
only subject. The film’s playful mixture of visual illusions
and constant-ly changing perspectives help the viewer understand
that they are in fact watching themselves. The film encourages
the viewer to ask: how do I per-ceive something? And what do
I perceive as real? What do I believe I am seeing? Ultimately,
the film’s viewers come to the realisation that they bear a
remarkable similarity to the sea that thinks it is a tree. Gert
de Graaff: “Once asked about the meaning of the poem he had
just recited, Dutch poet Rutger Kopland’s response was to re-read
his verse. For me, the question:‘what is it about?’ is fundamentally
incorrect; it stems from all those Hollywood films that only
use the medium to spoon-feed the audience a story. Ideally,
film should be the chosen medium because there is no better
alternative to relay a message: don’t narrate it, show it! Don’t
read it, watch it! In spite of this, my film does have a beginning
and an end, because I certainly didn’t intend making an experimental
film. I’m not interested in that. My film simply anticipates
the experiences the viewer will have while they are watching
the film.”
LA MER QUI
PENSE . .
projection.
